Wig Shopping 101
How Do You Buy Your First Wig?
Buying your first wig involves four key decisions: measuring your head size (average is 21.5"–22.5" circumference), choosing between synthetic or human hair fiber, selecting a cap construction type, and finding your color match. Budget ranges from $100 for a basic synthetic wig to $3,000+ for a premium 100% hand-tied human hair piece. Most first-time buyers do well starting with a mid-range synthetic lace front in the $200–$500 range.
How Do You Measure Your Head for a Wig?
Use a soft measuring tape around the circumference of your head: start at the center of your forehead at the hairline, go behind one ear, across the nape of your neck, behind the other ear, and back to the starting point. Standard wig sizes are: Petite (20.5"–21.5"), Average (21.5"–22.5"), and Large (22.5"–23.5"). Most women fall into the Average range. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size — wigs have adjustable straps and hook closures to customize the fit.
Should You Choose Synthetic or Human Hair?
| Factor | Synthetic Hair | Human Hair |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $100–$500 | $500–$3,000+ |
| Lifespan | 3–6 months (daily wear) | 1–3 years (daily wear) |
| Styling | Holds pre-set style after washing | Must be styled like natural hair |
| Heat Styling | No (unless heat-friendly) | Yes — curl, straighten, blow dry |
| Maintenance | Low — wash and wear | High — requires regular styling |
| Appearance | Good, less natural movement | Most natural look and feel |
How Do You Match Your Wig Color?
Wig colors use a standardized numbering system: 1 is jet black, 2 is darkest brown, 4 is medium dark brown, 8 is medium brown, 14 is dark golden blonde, 24 is light golden blonde, and 613 is platinum blonde. Colors with an "R" prefix (like 12FS8R) have darker roots that mimic natural hair growth. When in doubt, choose a shade slightly lighter than your natural color — wigs often appear darker when worn than on a color swatch. Order a color ring from the manufacturer if available, or visit a retail store to compare in person.
